Hana Yoo

Rapture, 2019

VR experience for HTC Vive, Mobile VR or Oculus Go

‘Rapture of the deep’, also called nitrogen narcosis, is a reversible alteration in consciousness that occurs while scuba diving. The film tells a narrative of experience underwater, disoriented and altered perception in the deep, along with the NDE (near-death experience). Reorganizing memories, Rapture explores the fluidity between fiction and reality, as well as mind and body. Inspired by Vilem Flusser’s philosophical fiction Vampyroteuthis Infernalis(1987), which imagines the deep sea creature as “other” to human, the narration speaks to an imaginary existence and address the futility of the notion of knowledge. “How funny it is, ‘To know’. We’ve studied and searched into the depths to know one thing about you, and yet, we're making things we don’t know, every time we create what we know.”
